Sexteto Mayor - The World’s Best in Contemporary Tango

They are not only called the Sexteto Mayor (the best sextet) - they are the best. There is no tango ensemble in the world that is more important or successful. Their interpretations of traditional tangos, right up to and including the works of Astor Piazzolla, are unique. In addition, their founders, the bandoneonists José Libertella and Luis Stazo, have composed numerous tangos of their own. There is more or less no country in the world where the Sexteto Mayor hasn’t played. In Europe the list of concert houses where they have performed reads like a “Who’s Who“ of venues: Théatre des Champs Elysées (Paris), Teatro Victoria (Madrid), Deutsche Oper (Berlin), Philharmonie (Köln), Teatro Tivoli (Helsinki), Kreml (Moskau), and so on.

They are now at the peak of a career which began 30 years ago in Buenos Aires and which has led since then from success to success. Of course the music world has long since recognised the significance of Sexteto Mayor. In 1995 they were awarded the most important prize in the world of Argentinean music, the “Premio Konex de Platino“, for 10 years of a constant and outstanding contribution to music. Only the best receive this prize, such as Astor Piazzolla, Horacio Salgán and Mercedes Sosa. Then in 2003 the Sexteto Mayor received the highest award possible: the “Latin Grammy® Award“.

The 8th December was a dramatic date for the Sexteto Mayor. The co-founder and arranger José Libertella died in Paris. Shortly after, his friend Luis Stazo left the ensemble. For quite a while after that the sextet rather lost its orientation, but then the remaining musicians appointed two new and outstanding younger bandoneon players, Horacio Romo und Pablo Mainetti, and the unforgettable arrangements of José Libertella are being performed again. In other words, the Sexteto Mayor is once again “mayor” – of major importance. According to the press, the group's rejuvenation has meant more fire and precision and an eagerness to experiment.
